Compost Systems
Compost is the backbone of a healthy garden. We can help set up an at-home compost system to turn your food scraps into soil!
Community Compost on Mansfield Ave
On the greenway in front of 91 Mansfield Ave we have a community compost pile! We encourage anyone in the area to deposit their food scraps here. We ask for anyone contributing to the pile to follow a few guidelines listed below, and fill out this quick survey to let us know how many buckets a week you’ll be adding.
No stickers or plastic. These are often left on banana peels and lead to microplastics in the soil.
No compostable containers or cups. Most takeout containers and cups that say they’re compostable will not break down in this system, please exclude them
No “bio bags” (the compostable green bags, they also won’t break down)
No meat or bones
No flowers that aren’t local. They often have persistent pesticides or fungicides.
Nothing that might have lead or other contaminating chemicals. If you’re ever uncertain don’t add it.
No garden debris, sticks, wood, or whole large plants
Compost Guidelines
Curious about Compost?
Composting is a magical alchemical process that is very near and dear to our hearts. It is the process of organic material (stuff that was recently soil, such as food), returning to soil. The soil made from composting is rich in nutrients and microbial life, perfect for growing beautiful, abundant plants in your backyard.
We are excited to help demystify this magic so more people can start creating compost in their backyards. We have been composting in our backyard in Burlington for a few years now and have had no issues, and as a result we’ve been able to save a lot of money in our gardens (soil is the most expensive input cost for starting and maintaining a garden).
We can help brainstorm what type of pile would work well for your living situation, come up with a management plan, and can manage your pile if desired. We need more people building soil to heal our degraded urban landscape. If you want to start transforming your household and neighborhood’s food scraps into rich, high-quality soil, reach out today!
